SEEKING EXCUSES. (VERSE NO. 8-10)

Another factor of blasphemy and denial is seeking excuses and adhering to flimsy pretexts such as their saying: ``Why should the prophet carry on his mission alone, when he may do things simultaneously with the help of an angel, so that we could also see him and assure our heart by that.''

The Holy Quran here gives a twofold answer to that request, that: 1) Had We sent down an angel, the matter would have been very soon determined and decreed, and they would be destroyed for rejecting such a manifest proof, and no respite would be given them.

      2) Besides that, if we had made him an angel, we had to send him a man - This is because an angel is an invisible heavenly being that differs widely in nature from man. He is all wisdom and void of such passions that man has; such as fear, hate, love, rage and lust. How can then a creature like that serve as an example and model of conduct for man? Even if their request to see an angel helping the prophet is to be granted, that angel has to be turned physically and spiritually on the semblance of a man. In that case their present confusion of mental apprehension about the spiritual life would be more confounded for saying; we asked to see an angel and we are seeing a man! Then denying such a manifest miraculous reason, would serve only to destroy them, for rejection of faith:

``And if We had made him an angel, We had to send him physically and spiritually on the semblance of a man like yourselves, and the existing confusion would be more confounding by that.''

Finally God gives His Messenger the consolation not to worry about the childish requests and foolish mockeries of the unbelievers, saying:

``Messengers before you were also mocked at, but at last the scoffers were mocked by the thing that they themselves mocked; for the object of their mockery surrounds them as an enemy may surround in a battle field.''
