VARIOUS SCOURGES

VERSE NO. 65

Through this verse the unbelievers are threatened by three kinds of scourages; from above- from below, and by schism:

``Allah is able to send upon you scourges from overhead, and from under your feet or confuse you by schism.''

Calamities from above and from below has a wide shade of meaning:

If we take it physically, it might refer to the sky scourges, such as lightning, thunder bolts, heavy rain falls, or to the earth scourges; like earthquake, floods, and high tides. We may also take it for the misfortunes that selfish and cruel rulers may bring down upon us, or the troubles that can be raised up by rebellious people.

We can also take it as the dangerous and fatal weapons of our age; such as bombardment by air forces, and the destructions that guided missiles can cause, or from the submarines and mine fields beneath us.

The Arabic word; `YALBISOKOM' is from the root, `LABS' which means to mix, to mingle, to confuse. It therefore implies that being confused by schism, and variances of opinion, which may divide people to hostile groups, is worse than other calamities, for causing insecurity and disorder.

Of course it is not God who persuades man to vary in opinion and create schism. In fact, differences are the consequence of our deviation from the standards of characters and ideas, and from known and established measures, by selfish motives and alluring caprices. That results in deviation from the right path, and falling into the pit of schism and differences.

Although the unbelievers and polytheists are addressed here and threatened thereby, we see in practice, that, all the nations as well as Muslims are sometimes afflicted by the misfortune of schism! There are a people who claim to be monotheists and yet they are afflicted with the said afflictions! This is because they are nominally monotheists, but in practice are worse than the polytheists.

God is on the tip of their tongues, but their conducts and behaviours prove them to be unbelievers. This is why we read in some traditions that Hazrat Imam Bagir (AS)has said:

``All the said afflicted people are those of the QIBLEH'' i.e. they are Muslims! And why not so, when a Muslim follows the conducts of non- Muslim as an example!?
