LEVITICUS 7: 22Verses 146-147

THE UNLAWFULS FOR THE JEWS (VERSE NO. 146)

In the foregoing verse four things were mentioned to be unlawful. Here some of the things that were unlawful to the jews are named, to show that what the pagans and polytheists have considered as a taboo or unlawful have no room among the commandments brought by Mohammad S.A. or in the Mosaic Law.

And besides, some of the prohibitions for the Israelites have a nature of punishment or as it is in their Biblical Literature they are, `Sin- offering' or `Repayment- Offerings':

``And to the Jews we forbade all the animals with undivided hoofs.''

This sort of prohibition is also stated in the present Bible too, We read that in theLEVITICUS - 11: 3-6

``You may eat all the land animals that have divided hoofs, and that also chew the cud. But you must not eat camels, badgers, and rabbit. They must be considered unclean. They do chew the cud, but have not divided hoofs.

Do not eat pigs. They must be considered unclean. They do have divided hoofs, but do not chew cuds. Do not eat these animals, or even touch their dead bodies.''

Quran, here in this verse, then refers to the fat which had been forbidden to the jews, saying:

``And of the cow and sheep, the fat of them was unlawful to them, except what their backs carry, or their entrials, or that which is mingled with their bones.''

The verse also implies that the prohibition of the fat was some sort of a punishment or a recompense for their rebellion.

This view of recompense is also confirmed in the Bible, where it says that such fat were used in the regulations of Sin- Offering and Repayment- Offerings:
