NOAH THE FIRST OF THE ARCH- PROPHETS (VERSE NO. 59 - 64)

Following the argument on the principles of Monotheism and Resurrection; reference is now made to the third of the greatest of Islam's tenets which is the Prophet hood. It begins with a brief story of NOAH the first of the Arch- Prophets, and then points briefly at the history of some of the apostles who lived in the period of time between Noah and Moses.

Noah's message and mission was rejected by his people, and for his mention of the torment of a Great Day, he was laughed at as a madman, and he was harshly ridiculed for his construction of the ARK in a land far from the sea. But soon God's punishment and wrath seized the whole generation in the Flood, and Noah, and some seventy persons who believed him were saved in the ARK.

The story of Noah has been narrated in more detail in the QURطN, through the chapters named: HUD, THE PROPHETS, THE BELIEVERS, and the POETS. There is also a chapter in the Quran, especially named after him, as NOAH.

In the first part of his mission, NOAH warned his generation against polytheism and in particular their worship of idols:

``O, My people! Worship only Allah- you have no other God but He.''

In the chapter of NOAH mention is made of various idols that they worshipped such as; VAD- SOWطH- YAGHUS and NASR. These we hope to explain in more detail when reaching to comment the chapter of NOAH.

Secondly, NOAH warned his people against the consequences of their idolatries which would appear as tornments in a great day:

``I fear for you the tornments of a Great Day.'' But NOAH'S friendly advices and truthful warnings were mocked at and rejected by his people, and in particular the chieftains of his people accused him of being mad, and in manifest error!

With kindness and mild words, the Arch- Prophet did his best to convince his obstinate and stubborn people; but of no use. They put their fingers in their ears not to hear his voice of truth. They belied him and rejected his call, so much so that, he was abandoned to despair of guiding them to the path of God. When so, God's wrath seized them, and they were drowned and destroyed in the Flood! Even the son of Noah was not excepted! These incidents can be read, here and there in many chapters of Quran with enough details.
