TRY TO KNOW THE HYPOCRITES (VERSES NO. 43 - 45)

The verse begins with an exclamation phrase: ``Allah forgave you'' without there being the question of any fault, this is somewhat like the exclamatory English expression: ``God save you! which is a friendly expression far from the existence of any danger.

The prophet had granted exemption to some of the hypocrites and nominal Muslims who asked for it, even if the prophet did not know of their concealed hypocrisy, he knew their reluctance and slackness, from their backgrounds and past behaviours, and was sure that, if they joined him or held back, in both cases were a burden and of no use at all. Giving them permission to live at home, from the military point of view could only seem a little liberal and unchecked.

There remains the question that: `Did the prophet not recognize the hypocrites among his forces? And why was he expected to refrain from giving them exemption?''The answer might be:

Even if the prophet knew their falsehood and hypocrisy, it would still be better to give them a rope to hang themselves and let them have the means that could make them known to all, and reveal their hidden motives and ideals clearly to all the believers.

A believer - a true believer, will do his duty without excuses and objections, and asks not for any exemption. This is because FAITH, makes a man faithful and firm in adherence to promise and obligations, where as doubt and wavering in faith, will take away the stability of conduct. Therefore, even if those who were exempted had come out with the Messenger of God, they would have added nothing to their strength! On contrary, they could have caused disorders, and waverings among the warriors.

This was not the distinguishing mark of believers and unbelievers only for the primeval Muslims. Today too, it is a good criterion to know that, true believer is brave, firm, resolute, and that a hypocrite is coward, doubtful, and perplexed, with many excuses.
