Quran,Translation and Commentary in Brief (Vol. 04)
Verses 81-82Verses 78-80

The above verses relate a part of the story of David and Solomon, and begins with a brief reference to David's judgement who was the king, and to that of his son who was then a boy of eleven years old. Qurän relates the incident in brief, but the commentators have their own explanations according to some Islamic traditions. Most of them narrate the story as follows:ِ

The shaphered who looked after the sheep of a people was careless, and the sheep went into a vineyard by night, and ate up the bunches of grape, and caused a lot of damage to the  whole garden.

The owner of the vineyard complained to David. In his judgement, the king awarded the owner of the yard the intruding sheep, for compensation of the damages, and the loss that they had caused.

Solomon, the son of David who was a mere boy of about eleven years old, issued a better and more just decree, which his father preferred that.

Solomon said; the loss was the loss of the products and fruits, and not the field itself. So the owner of the land may detain the sheep so long as to get an equivalent amount to compensate the loss of his fruits.

Solomon although a little boy put his suggestion before his father, but in both cases it was God who made Solomon and his father to understand, and do their judgements; and both decrees were right and just.

David might have estimated the price of the sheep to have been equal to the value of the loss, that they had caused; so his decision was to give the sheep to the gardener. This is why Qurän says:ِ

``We gave each of them the merits of judgement, and knowledge.''

Any how, that of Solomon was preferred over the judgement of his father.

As to how, did the birds and mountains sing (NO.79) the praise of God in unison with David, various ideas are given by commentators:ِ

Some of them say:ِ ``Not only the mountains and the birds, but whatever exist in the heavens and the earth, celebrate the praise of God in their own creed and language; but we cannot understand their prayer and supplication.

In other word, all nature sings to God's Glory if we could only understand their language.

Some other commentators have said:ِ ``David sang the praise of God as sweet as a bird, and therefore when his song was reflected through the mountains, the birds gathered around, to listen to it, and they too sang the praise of Allah in unison with David!''

In the next verse (NO.80), the making of coats of mail and other kinds of defensive armour is attributed to David.
