Verses 46-50Verses 41-45

Here the reference is to a fact that, applies to all people, in all ages, that; the source of corruption is the evil deeds of people. Wherever a corruption appears, be it in the land or sea, it is a reaction or a reflection, of people's action. This is to say; life is what we make it. On the other hand God has decreed so that people may taste some of what they have done of evil, perhaps they return in repentance, and amend their wrongs.

Some commentators have narrated that; when our prophet cursed the people of Mecca for their corruption and oppression, they were afflicted with droughts and famine. It then stopped to rain. Deserts became dry and barren. Even fishery from the Red Sea became difficult for the pagans, and hence the above verse (NO.41) was sent down to this effect.

Even if this tradition be true, it does not contrast with the general sense of meaning of the verse, and the two comments can be gathered together. Such an occasion of revelation will not confine the general meaning of the verse to a certain and limited matter. We may also understand another meaning that, the corrupted rulers who extended their oppression from the land to the see can also be the objects of the verse.

When God the absolute goodness and mere beauty and truth, created the sea and the land, there was no such things as; sin, corruption, mischief, and oppression. It was rather Man who created all these, by his arrogance, folly, selfishness, and evil thoughts; and then, sin and corruption appeared in the land and sea, due to what people's hands have earned.

As evil comes from evil, God made the evil doers to taste some of what they have done, that they might see the consequences of their corruptions and return to God in repentance. That, it also may serve as a warning for those who are apt to go wrong. Therefore the object of the Merciful's punishment is not to take vengeance, but to reclaim Man from evil.

The next verses (NO.42 & 43) show a good way to overcome such corruptions that have appeared or, at least to lessen it:-

``Travel in the land and see how was the end of those from before, most of whom were polytheists.

Then keep your face firm to the upright religion, before it is too late, and a day comes that no one can ward it off against the will of Allah.''

When evil and corruption covers the face of good morales and fair behaviours, Man must either get more and more of ropes to hang himself, and to destruct his society, or return to the direct way that his Lord has shown him.

In order to recover the balance of morales that has been upset by evil, Man has to grasp the chain of God, and scatter not, by keeping their faces firm to the upright religion of God, the principle of which is Monotheism. Man should beware of his end and of the Day of Dooms, in which God will judge more with His justice, and perhaps less by His Mercy; although we are sure that His Mercy precedes His wrath.

Here in this life it is possible for us to remove and avert the consequences of evil, only by repentance and amendment, but when we die, everything will be too late, and we have lost all opportunities for repentance and return.
