Verses 18-20Verses 12-17

In that critical condition that the confederates had created, Moslems were divided in different groups. Some of them remained faithful, and some were weak in faith and wavered. Some were anxious for their own life, and some for this home and hearth.

The incident of the great, hard, rock, that the prophet exploded by his axe, and through the spark light foretold that his followers would soon conquer Iran and Rome, East and West, Yemen and elsewhere; became a general topic of disputes, and an object of taunt and mockery.

All the warriors of Medina had come out of the town and stationed in certain places, at the border of the Moat. A group of the hypocrites who always played fast and loose, and had a sick mind and heart, began to sow the seeds of doubt and despair; by taunting and spreading rumours. They proceeded to withdraw for the defence of their homes, while their houses were fully covered by the defensive forces of Islam. They said to the warriors who stood firm in front of the enemy, and all the people of Medina:-

``O, people of Yasrib! There is no room for you to stay in this battle- field. So get you all back to your houses as soon as you can.''

By that their intention was to separate the Helpers from the Emigrants.

YASRIB was the old name of the town, which later was named after the Messenger of God, and called; ``MEDINATULNABI'' which means the city of the prophet.

They mentioned the town by its old name, to despise its new one, and to show that it had nothing more to do with our prophet!

The next verse shows that, how weak a group of them were in faith and mind:-

``And so were they that if the enemy had entered upon them from the Zones of the town, and asked them to recant and return to their old faith, they would have obeyed, by returning to idolatry with no much delay!''

They were only cowards who cared mainly about their own safety, and properties.

Even though they could not reach their goal, if it was to live safe and secure. Even if they could escape death in the battle-field, where could they go to, with that brand of cowardice and betrayal that was marked upon their foreheads?

They would be subject to vengeance of their foe and friend boath; and after all, how could they escape God's punishment for committing such that heinous sin!?
