Verse 50Verse 49

The above verse alludes to some other religious rules about divorce.

Islam wishes to maintain the bonds of a married life as far as possible. For this purpose a waiting period which religiously is termed, ``IDDAT'' has been settled to prevent any hasty decision, and to let the doors open for reconciliation.

In the above verse, the reference is to a special case. When a wife is given or taken a divorce, without being touched, and made love with; for her is not necessary to keep the iddat, which is a waiting period of three monthly courses.

Making some provisions for the divorced, and untouched wife, may mean paying her at least half of the dower that was due to her, or as some doctors of the law say, give her a gift according to the possibilities of the separated spouses. Any how, she should be released respectfully and honourably, without any malice and ill will.

As to the phrase, ``WITH RESPECT TO THEM'' implies that observing the period by the woman, is some sort of a right of man, and it is settled to prove if the wife is pregnant or not.

As to the phrase, ``WHEN YOU MARRIED BELIEVING WOMAN'' it does not mean that a believer cannot marry other women, such as those Christians or Israelites, who believe in their Scriptures. Of course the marriage with such women, will have their own conditions; but it is possible for a believing Moslem to marry a Jewess or a Christian woman or a Zoroastarian who are known as the people of Divin Book.
