THE ALL- SEEING THE ALL-HEARING Introduction

The origin of Samee’ is Sama’ and it actual means the capacity through which man hears the sounds and voices and understand them. Some times it is used to denote ears. Then with time its application attained a wide meaning and it began to be used for spiritual understand and hearing also. It is also used to denote the complete control God has all kinds of sounds.

Some times this word is used to denote the capacity of understanding things like in Surah Anfal Verse 21 that says, “Do not be like those who said, “We heard” but they do not listen” (1)

The origin of the word “Baseer” is “Bars” and Raghib in Mafuradat says that it means the instrument of seeing that is the eye. It is also used to denote the capacity of seeing. And in this way is also used to denote the inherent capacity to understand like in Surah Qaf verse 22 that says, “You were heedless of this; now We have removed the veil from you, your sight today (the day of death or the Day of judgment) is sharp”

Ibn Manzoor has mentioned this meaning of the Basr in Lisan-ol-Arab but Sahai Loghata has defined it as the capacity to see and has also mentioned it as knowledge and wisdom. Misbah has taken the word Basr in the sense of that through which man is able to see the things that need to be seen but from the definitions of the linguists on the whole we discern that this word was first used for the instrument of seeing then for the capacity of seeing. It has also been taken to mean esoteric understanding. When it is used for God it means the encompassing of all that exists.
