INTRODUCTION THEY ALL CHANT HIS PRAISE

The attributes of the creatures are defective and it has been repeatedly said that you cannot define the purity of God through them. This is what the Islamic Hadith warn us about because you cannot achieve the knowledge of God without it and Oneness and polytheism will intermixed. The division n of the inherent and manifest attributes is our creation or else the being of God is nothing but One. We look at Him through our narrow inlet of existence and find Him to be the complete perfection, complete in knowledge and power. If we only saw Him through the window of t truth then we will find His entity free from ignorance, dependence and all other defects.

If we do not know the negative attributes we will not understand the positive ones. The defects in understanding one will come to the fore in understand the second. It is necessary at this point that we pay attention to the Islamic Hadith on this issue.

In one of his sermons the Amirul Mominin said, “ God is not obstructed from one condition to another nor can time create changes in Him, no place can accommodate Him and no language can truly describe His attributes” (1)

In another sermon he explained man’s inability to understand the issue of death and life and said, “HOW CAN A PERSON WHO CANNOT EXPLAIN THE ATRIBUTES OF CREATIONS LIKE HIMSELF EXPLAIN ANYTHING ABOUT GOD?” (2)

There is this Hadith wherein a companion asked Imam Jafar Sadiq, “Tell me which deed is greater?” the Imam replied, “The Oneness of your lord! “ He asked again, “which is the greatest sin?” The Imam replied, “Comparison of the created with the Creator!”(3)

In another Hadith Imam Jafar Sadiq said, “God cannot be explained through time, place, activity, movement and emplacement (Because He is far above them all) He is the one who has created, time, place, activity, movement, inactivity. God is great far above what the unjust say about Him.”(4)

In one Hadith Amirul Mumineen is recorded to have explained the term “Samad” or independent Lord and Master. He said, “ The explanation of “ Samad” is that He has no name, no physique, no similitude or allegory, no face, no anthropomorphism, no limitation, no boundaries, no position and no station, no condition, no station neither here nor there, He does not fill nor is there any void, he neither rises nor sits, is neither inert or in action, neither dark nor light, neither spiritual nor egoistic, no space is without Him when there is no space that can accommodate Him, he has no color, he does not pass through any heart, no one has smelled Him. All these things are far from Him and He is purified and bereft of them all. (5)

It should be clear the denial of the names for him means the denial of the names attributed to His creations.

After discussion the negative or hidden attributes we will now take up the issue of detailed knowledge.
