We mentioned earlier that the Qura’n tells us in various verses that there are three kinds of Books of Deeds.

There will one book for every person in which his deeds will be recorded and this will be given to him either in the left or right hand. This is found in various verses like verses 13 and 14 of Surah Isra that says:

“We have fastened every man’s deeds to his neck and on the Day of Resurrection We shall bring out a book which he will find wide open. “ Read your book. You yourself are sufficient as a judge against you this Day.”

The terms “every man’ and “book” clearly refer to the book of deeds.

“Come read my book” and “Alas I wish my book was not given to me” that have come in Surah Haqqa verses 19 and 25 also describe the same thing.

The Book of Deeds of the nations in which will be written the deeds of a nation. Verse 18 of Surah Jasiya says:

“Each nation will be called to its records”. It mentions books and not book and this confirms what we have said.

Then there will be the Book of Deeds which will record the deeds of every person of all nations. This will be the centralized record Verse 49 of Surah Kahf speaks about this:

“And the book will be placed sand you will find the sinners fearful of it.”

It is clearer in verse 12 of Surah Yasin that says:

“And all things We have recorded with numbers in a clear book.” And it is very clearly about the resurrection of the dead and the record of their deeds. This mention of the book that records everything is the proof that the deeds of all men and things will be recorded in one book.

Allama Tabatabai has written about this kind of Book of Deeds in Al Mizan but the verses he has referred to are a little different from the above verses (1)

The notable point is that in Surah Mutafffifin the verse 18 mentions a fourth kind which is separate for the pious and the sinners. “7. The record of the sinners is in Sijjeen and Verily the record of the pious is preserved in the Illiyin.”

It is clear that there is no contradiction between the Books of Deeds and there is nothing to prevent one deed to be firmly recorded in different places. We do the same for our worldly deeds.

All this confirms the fact that man should be full aware and attentive and he should know that his deeds are recorded not in one but in many places. It is not possible that he does something and not accounted for on the Day of Judgment. Moreover God’s knowledge and aware encompasses them all.
