IntroductionWhat will we be questioned about?

From the hadiths and from certain sign in the verses we find the account will be taken very minutely on the Day of Judgment.

There is a hadith from Imam Sadiq that says:

He asked a person, “Why do you treat your Muslim brother in this way?” He answered “May I be sacrificed on you! I had a lien upon him which I did not recover till the last.” The Imam said:

“Tell me what do you think about the words of God that say “Some people will be afraid of the audit of their deeds” Are they afraid of God’s injustice? By God! Never! They will be afraid that perchance their deeds may not be audited minutely till the last stage” (1)

Imam Baqir is reported to have said:

“God will take the account of every person according to his mental standard that he had bestowed upon him in this world.” (2)

It is clear from this des c r i p tion that there is a connection between the mental condition and responsibilities because God will take account according to the responsibilities.

Now there is this group whose accounts will be taken severely and minutely but the second group is one whose accounts will be easy. These are the people that the verses 7 and 8 of Surah Inshiqaq speak about:

“And as for him who will be given his record in his right hand will surely have an easy reckoning.”

There is a hadith of the messenger in which he says:

“God will make the accounts easy for any one who has these three things and will enter him in Paradise through his mercy.”

Some one asked: “O Messenger of God! What are they?” he answered: “Help the person who has deprived you, re-establish the bonds with one who has broken them and forgive the person who has been unjust with you.” (3)

The tradition makes it clear that the goodness in behavior also makes the account easy. There is this hadith of the Messenger that says:

“Better your behavior God will make your accounts easy for you.” (4)

From these Islamic teachings we learn that people are different so far as the accounts by God is concerned. For some the accounts will be taken very harshly and minutely and it will be for those who were severe on others or were uncivil, unjust and oppressors. But the accounts of the second group will be easy due to their good deeds, decent behavior and being kind to people in this world or because they were not adversely affected by status and wealth in this world.

There is a third group who will enter Paradise without giving any account. There is a hadith from the Messenger about the different categories of people that says:

“Some people will enter Paradise without accounting because they were not tainted by the evils of this world. The accounting there will be for those who were very involved with this world.” (5)

Then there are others who will go to Hell without any accounting and there is hadith from the Messenger that says:

“God will take the account of every creature excepting the person who resorted to polytheism. He will be thrown into Hell without any accounting.”(6)

There is a hadith from Imam Sadiq that says:

“Three groups of people will enter Hell without being accounted, the tyrant leader, the lying trader and the aged adulterer.” (7)

We end this discussion with a hadith of the Messenger that says:

“Six kinds of people will enter Hell without be accounted, the tyrant, the Arabs because of being biased, the leader because of being vain, the lying trader, the Ulema because of jealousy and the wealthy because of being miserly.” (8)

“Lord! Make our accounts easy by your beneficence. Be merciful on us. You know that we are empty handed and come to you with darkened books of deeds.
