The adornment in ParadiseThe Goblets and Cups

A dress in this world has a special importance. Firstly it saves the body from heat and cold and other harmful affects and secondly it helps adorn a personality. At times the way of dressing, the color and sewing reflect the nature of a person.

The dress has been a method of human adornment through history and its importance is still the same.

The dress in Paradise is definitely not to protect a person from cold, heat or other hardships because everything there will be balanced and there will be no hardships there. Wearing a dress there will be for adornment only. This is why the adornment has been discussed more in the Qura’n and there are various des c r i p tions about the dresses of paradise.

Verse 31 of Surah Kahf says:

“They will wear garment of fine silk and heavy brocade.”

The similar meaning is conveyed in verse 53 of Surah Dukhan and verse 21 of Surah Dahr.

The first says: “They will face each other dressed in fine silk and rich brocade”

The second says: “On their bodies will be garments of green of fine silk and heavy brocade.” (1)

Verse 23 of Surah Hajj says: “Their garment there will be of silk.”

The same meaning has come in verse 33 of Surah Fatir and a similar meaning is there in verse 12 of Surah Dahr. According to the unanimous agreement of the commentators and the linguists the word “Sundus” means a fine silk cloth which is very costly. The origin of this word is not from Arabic (according to some books it may be either Persian or Roman) though there is no such word in Persian. (2)

Some believe the word to be Greek (3). Some have taken the word to mean a cloth woven from gold threads.

According to the linguists and commentators the word “Istabraq” is used for thickness and heaviness originates from the words “Istabar” or “Satabar” of Persian. They say the cloth woven from silk are “Deeba” and “Hareer”. This has a vast meaning. If this cloth is very fine then it is called “Sundus”. If it is heavy then it is termed “Istabraq”. This tells us that the dress of the Paradise dwellers will be made of pure silk and of various designs.

We may not need to say that a silk cloth is regarded as the best for its softness, attraction and colors. Since there is no cloth costlier and more beautiful than this so this des c r i p tion has been used for us to understand for everything in the hereafter is beyond our comprehension.

The notable point is that only the color green is mentioned for the dress in Paradise. This may be because this is the best and most attractive color in the natural universe. The plants normally are all green. The river and sea waters are green in places and human nature is more inclined towards this color for it pleases the heart. Some scientists have declared green to be a source of pleasant ease.

There is a book named “Health and Attire” which says:

“The color green as a treatment is very good for those suffering physical and mental weakness and is good for hysteria patients too. It is good for easing and for mental balance. It is good for insomnia, blood pressure and for comfort from physical pain. The color green reflects their mild and balanced nature and spiritual happiness of those who prefer it.

At some place laborers were divided into three groups. One group was given a green casket, the second a black one and the third silver one. The people who went mostly to the hospital where the ones from the second or third group. They suffered from back pains etc.

There was a black bridge in London which recorded the most amounts of suicides but when it was painted green the figures declined. (4)

There is an old and famous saying that three things dispel melancholy and despair: Water, greenery and a beautiful face.

We end this discussion with the words of a commentator who says that the attires of Paradise are so beautiful that if one of them is spread in this world then the entire world will be mesmerized. (5)

1. The Origin of “Aalihim” is “Allaw”and means “On top of them”. Two explanations have been given and one is that it is a utensil because the word “Fauq” has been used to show its placement and second is “present” as in time and used in the previous verse.
2. At-Tahqiq fi Kalimati Qura’n al Karim.
3. Ma’jamol Loghata (Dahkhada)
