The Ins c r i p tions on the gates of ParadiseParadise is waiting

No verse in the Qura’n says that there are 8 gates in Paradise. The book only says that there are 7 gates of Hell.

The verse 44 of Surah Hijr says;

“(It) Hell has seven gates.”

Some hadiths says that there are 8 gates for Paradise. This may be telling us that the centers of evil are less and so is the fear of falling into Hell. But the centers of well being are more. God mercy is more than His displeasure.

There is a hadith in which Amirul Muminin is reported to have said: ‘there are 8 gates for Paradise.” and then he gave the details, “the truthful ones will enter from some gates, the witnesses and martyrs and the righteous from some others and the followers of the Messenger and his progeny from others.” (1)

Imam Baqir is reported to have said:

“Always think good of God and know that there are 8 gates for Paradise. The width of each gate is a journey of 40 years.” (2)

Some hadiths tell us that there are 71 gates for Paradise and there is a hadith from Hazrat Ali about this. (3)

This may be referring to their being numerous but at one point of comparison with Hell 8 gates have been mentioned to tell us that the pathways to well being are more than those of evil . It also may be referring to the numbers of nations being more l and each of them will meet God’s mercy in its own way.

The various des c r i p tions clarify that the gates of Paradise are compatible with the good deeds that the righteous do. There is a hadith in which Imam Sadiq is reported to have said:

“There is one gate of Paradise which is called the gate of the Mujahids and it will open when they move towards it. There swords will in their sheaths and the angels will welcome them.”(4)

The same thing is there in Nahjul Balagha but in another style:

“Jihad is one among the gates of Paradise which God opens for His servants.” (5)

There is a hadith from the Prophet of Islam in which he says:

“There is one gate of Paradise called “The quencher of thirst.” Only those who fast (in Ramadan) will enter through it.” (6)

In another hadith he said:

“There is gate of paradise called the “Gate of Goodness” and only the righteous will enter through it.” (7)

There are other hadiths about “Gate of Patience”, “Gate of thankfulness”, “Balaa’ etc. Some hadiths tell us that the shadow of the swords cover the gates of paradise. This may be referring to Jihad. (8)

According to the Hadith in kafi from Imam Kazim this refers to that the fact that whoever follows Hazrat Ali in morals, behavior, faith and deeds will enter Paradise.(9)

The meaning of the gates of Paradise is now clear from what has been said here.
