Shedding the blood of the innocentHoarding of Wealth

We know this to be one of the greatest sins in Islam and it is a sin that leads to the defeat, insult and hardships of the Islamic society. Its punishment is one of the severest. Verses 15 and 16 of Surah Anfal say:

“O believers! Do not turn your backs to the disbelievers when you face them in the battlefield. Whoever turns his back to them except for maneuvering in battle or for joining others deserves the wrath of God and his abode is Hell and what a bad abode it is.”

According to the linguists “zahf” means to drag one’s feet as the infants do when they learn to walk or as the camel walks when it is very tired. Then this word began to be used to denote the maneuvering of a great force because the size and numbers of the people often give the idea that they are dragging their feet.

This sentence tells us that no matter how great the numbers of the enemy is it should not be the cause to retreat without the permission of the commander or flee from the battlefield without fighting the enemy.

It should be noted that this is an established command of Islam so attaching this verse to the Battle of Badr only as some commentators have done is totally without proof as Tafsir Al Mizan has said (2) that this verse was revealed for Badr. (3) The desertion from battle field is one of the causes for going to Hell.
