Extreme humiliation and admonishmentIntroduction

The spiritual pain and punishments mean those deeds that affect the soul of a human being. They may not have any visible physical affects or they may be two pronged affecting both the soul and the body.

The first verse speaks about a sample of the second kind. It says, “There will be a humiliating punishment for those who reject Our faith and deny Our signs”

The Qura’n does not specify how these punishments will inflict insults on them but just give a brief hint. Many kinds of humiliating punishments are covered in this verse and it says that the vain and the self indulgent people will be thrown into the abyss of humiliation.

Some commentators including Qartabi say that this humiliating punishment here means the kind of punishments heaped on the pagans at the battle of Badr. But if we look at the earlier verse in which the glad tidings of Paradise has been given to the righteous we will understand that this verse speaks about the humiliating punishment in Hell.

This sentence oft-repeated in the Qura’n tells us that the punishments of hell are full of numerous kinds of humiliations which affect the souls also. This is the manifestation of the insults and disdain that they showed to the Apostles of God and the true believers. They will see their own deeds in this form on that day.

In the second verse the book speaks about the humiliation of the sinners which in itself is a dreadful spiritual chastisement. It speaks in the words of those who believed (Ulil albaab):

“You have surely disgraced whoever you force to enter the fire. The wrongdoers will have no helpers.”

The word “akhzayta” is derived from the word “ Khizi” and it has many meanings in the dictionaries like , decadence, removal, humiliation, infamy, insult and the commentators have also confirmed these meanings.(1)

The tone of this verse tells us that the spiritual punishments in the hereafter are more dreadful because the “ Ulil albaab” will tell God “ You have disgraced those whom you have thrown in Hell” this tells us that this disgrace is worse than the fires of Hell. It like those people who are not perturbed by going to jail but are very worried about the secrets of the matter being let out because it will lead to their disgrace in society and this is more painful than going to jail.

The verse says, “The wrongdoers will find no helpers” and this means that what ever they suffer will be due to their deeds. They should certainly have no helpers although this verse is not against intercession for those who deserve it because here it speaks about those helpers who used to help the oppressors with their strength and it does not mean that divine help will not be accepted.

The third verse speaks about the eternal punishments and pain of the people in Hell. They will be pushed back whenever they try to escape their punishment and they will be told, “Taste the chastisement of fire.” as in verse 21 of Surah Hajj.

This is an example of their spiritual punishment. (2)

1. See Maqayis-ol-Logaht, Misbahol Logha, Lisan-ol-Arab, and Tahqiq fi Kalimati Qura’n. Tafsir Majmaul Bayan gives two meanings for Khizi one is destruction and the second is to be in a humiliating situation.
2. the word “Hareeq” is a describing word but is used a verb; according to some it is a hyperbole and according to Mafuradat it means fire. This seems very appropriate that punishment is added to it.
