The Fourth KindThe second group of verses on intercession

These are the verses that declare intercession to be possible only with the permission of God and they complete the meaning of the second group. So the fifth verse (255 of Surah Baqarah) expresses negation in an exclamatory manner:

“Who can intercede with Him without His permission?”

All the interceders like the Apostles and saints will take permission to id from God and the core of his permission is His wisdom i.e. the accounting. The permission will not be granted until the person concerned is worth being interceded (Please keep this in mind for reference in the proper place)

The point to note is that in these verses of the Ayatol Kursi God’s authority and domain is first established and then this verse. So the fountainhead of intercession is God’s authority, His ownership and his control and this negates the idea of the pagans who thought that they could be supported by the intercession of the idols.

The same meaning is conveyed in the 6th verse but in another manner. It is said:

“On that Day no intercession will help anyone except that which is permitted by God and with whose words He is pleased.”

What does the term “excepting that which is permitted by God” mean? There are two views about it. The first is that it means those who may intercede and have been appointed by God to do so and the second is that it means those who will benefit from the intercession who will be allowed after God’s permission. The first idea seems more correct because it is compatible with the previous verse where the permission for the intercessors was discussed. Our contention is supported by the verse and many commentators have accepted it.

The term “and with whose words He is pleased” also has two views. The first says it means the intercessors or their intercession will be accepted whose words and deeds and character are approved by God. So the two sentences will compliment each other. The second says it will be those who will benefit from intercession and with whose words God will be agreeable. Here it means those who have pure faith, and righteous deeds. This is why god will permit intercession for them but it would be better if the second sentence was annexed to the first so that both could mean the same.

This verse is the clear sign of God’s permission for intercession for a group of sinners.

The 7th verse also has the same meaning in another style. It is said:

“No intercessor can there by except with His leave.”

So why do you worship the idols in hope of intercession? Worship the only God and not any other, why don’t you understand?

The same meaning is there in the 8th verse that the intercession by others is only after the permission from God. It is said:

“How many angels are there in the heavens whose intercessions is of no avail at all save that that God permits.”

When the angels after their great prominence are not authorize to intercede with God’s permission then what hope can we have from the useless idols? Is it not shameful that they say” We worship the idols because they will intercede with God on our behalf.”?

The strange fact is that the word “Kam” has been used here which denotes great numbers. The word “heavens” has been used to denote that the intercession of them all without the permission of god is useless. The angels have been mentioned among those who may intercede because a group among the Arabs used to worship them. Or it may be because if their intercession without God’s permission is useless then what hope can we have from the idols?

The “acceptability” and “permission” are complimentary because permission is given only after acceptability. But agreeability is with the unseen and sometimes may be expressed due to compulsion and without no inner acceptability is found so both the words have been used together to stress the fact. Though there can be no inkling of force compulsion attached to God because His acceptability and permission are both united.

Is this permission linked to those who may intercede or to those who will benefit from intercession? This verse may contain both the meanings though collectively it seems proper that it be attributed to the intercessors or that god gives them the permission to intercede and is agreeable to it.
