The Day of TruthThe Painful Day

This name has also come only once in verse 20 of Surah Qaf that says:

“The trumpet shall be blown: It is the promised day.”

The word “Promise” has come many times in the Qura’n but the term “The promised Day” has come only once. The word “Wa’eed” has been derived from the word “Wa’ad”. Raghib has declared in Mafuradat that “Wa’ad” is used for both well being and harm but “Wa’eed” is used only for the promise of punishment. Ibn Manzoor has described it as admonishment and the word “Eeya’d” too is used in the same context.

This name is hint about the promised punishment on the Judgment Day. It includes the hardships of the gathering and the implementation of God’s justice, the torments of Hell and also the material and spiritual torments like the infamy in front of all other creatures and the de-linking from closeness to God.

There is a debate among the commentators as to whether the blowing of the trumpet means death and the destruction of the world or is it to herald the beginning of the hereafter. But the verse 21 says, “And every person will come forth with a mover who will also bear witness.”

This verse is the proof that this means the second blowing of the trumpet and that only will be the Promised Day. (1)

1. Many commentators like Abu Fatuh Razi, Allama Tabatabai, Fakhruddin Razi, and Aloosi in Ruhul Ma’ani and Maraghi in his tafsir have accepted this meaning for the above verse.
