RELATION WITH NON-BELIEVERS
VERSE NO. 7-9
Here is the glad-tidings that God may in future turn our enemies to a friend. This promise was fulfilled for the Moslims by the conquest of Mecca. When God's help and victory was attained, the people of Mecca entered the religion of Islam in crowds.
The religious hatred or enmity may sometimes be due to ignorance or zeal and fervous. We know that UMAR, the second KHALIF of Islam was going to persecute his sister for her conversion, when he heard some verses of QurÌn being recited in the sister's house! UMAR gave ear to the verses, and pondered over the meanings a little while and trembled with enthusiasm. He changed his mind and way and went directly to the prophet and converted! He was then 180ú degrees out of phase with the angle which he had before his conversion.
The next verses determine the conditions of making friends and establishing relationship with non-Moslims. They are classified as two separate groups:-
1) Those who stood or stand against Moslims and fight with them because of the religion of Islam, and expel Moslims from their homes and hearth, and they show their enmity with their words and acts.
Here, the duty of a Moslim is to cut off all kinds of relations with such non-Moslims.
2) The second group of the non_believers are those who have no ill will against Moslims, and they do not intend to bother or harm them and are willing to live a peaceful and logical life with them. To such unbelievers, a Moslim has to be kind and equitable.
This is a standard for relationship, and a general instruction for Moslims of ages and all places to know how should they treat the non-believers.
Allah does not forbid us to be kind and merciful to all people, and even to unbelievers or non-Moslims, as long as they do not proceed to destroy us or our faith. The word of hatred and enmity is applied on those who strive in the battles, to destroy our religion, and to drive us out of our homes. Those who support and help such enemies of us, or our religion too, are the targets for our hatred and enmity.
