Quran,Translation and Commentary in Brief (Vol. 06)
Verses 11-23Verses 1-10

OCCASION OF REVELATION
Once our prophet was deeply engaged in preaching some of the leaders and chiefs of the pagan Arabs, with the hope of attracting them to Islam.
Meanwhile, he was interrupted by a poor and blind Moslim, who was very eager to know more about the truth. His name was ``ABDULLAH-OMME MAKTUM''. He asked the prophet to teach him some of the verses that were recently revealed to him, but he could not see the situation that the prophet had with the highups.
Perhaps it come to pass in the prophet's mind or thought, the chief would think of Mohammad to be the prophet of the beggars and blinds. He probably frowned and turned towards the chief of Quraish and continued preachiong them. Then, the above reproaching verses were revealed to him.
After that, the prophet always regarded Abdullah and whatever they met, he said to him:-
``Hail to him for whom Allah admonished me.'' and then asked; ``Can I do anything for you.''
Later on, twice the prophet appointed Abdullah as his vicegerant and governor of Medina, when he had to leave the town for a sacred battle.
A second opinion about the above revelation is that; leading man from the UMAYYADS was sitting with the prophet, when the said Abdullah arrived and sat beside them. The man who was talking to the prophet frowned and turned his back to Abdullah, as if he would be infected by him. So, reproaching verses revealed to admonish the man who was sitting with the prophet.
As a matter of fact, there is nothing in the verses to indicate clearly that our prophet was the object of the blame or someone else. The words only show that Allah has blamed someone for an act of preferring a rich unbeliever over a poor and blind believer.

COMMENTS
VERSE NO. 1-10
By referring to the above occasion of revelation, we may conclude that a poor and blind man, if he is willing to learn, may be more likely to develop.
